While your skin will go through a natural exfoliation process every 28 days, helping your skin along by exfoliating 1-2 times weekly will leave your skin fresh and vibrant. Regular exfoliation will also allow for the correct absorption of your serums and creams into the deeper layers of the skin. Therefore nourishing and treating the emerging skin cells and not using up all of the products goodness to keep the already dead surface layers alive, essentially wasting the products you paid good money for.
As with all beauty products exfoliants come in a variety of forms. They will fall into 2 categories. Chemical & mechanical. They will both achieve the same result, it’s how they get there that is the difference.
Chemical exfoliators are solutions that are slightly more acidic than the skin, allowing them to gently loosen dead skin cells from living ones. You can think of them as ingredients that loosen the “glue” between skin cells.
Mechanical exfoliation, on the other hand, involves utilising a slightly rough surface (like a washcloth, microdermabrasion, or a cleansing brush) or exfoliating substances (such as granules of salt, sugar, or even ground coffee) to slough off the top layer of skin.
As with cleansing, over exfoliating can be damaging to your skin and also increase the oil flow as it tries to make up for what your taking away.
Sometimes less is more.
